The new hospital complex at St. Bartholomews, London is a part of the world’s largest new build programme with a total investment of around £1 billion. The hospital now has a new cancer and cardiac centre of excellence, one of the most advanced care centres in the world with its state-of-the-art facilities. Fire would therefore result in catastrophic consequences with the concentration of specialised equipment. The quality of the building environment had to match the quality of medical care so Nicholls and Clarke, the largest distributor of fire glass were approached to provide a solution. Pilkington Pyrostop integrity and insulation fire resistant glass (Pyrostop 60-101 and Pyrostop 30-10) proved to be exactly what the doctor ordered and was used for large area glazing at key locations where high performance fire protection was required. Other products including special acoustic laminates, integral blind glass units and x-ray shielding glass were all used and delivered to site to a tight delivery schedule.
